Prosecutors in the southern city of Trani are set to request that a probe into the MMR vaccine against measles, mumps, and rubella be shelved, after finding no evidence of a link between it and autism, ANSA sources said. A study of checks run in Puglia showed that autism also hit children who did not receive the MMR vaccine, the sources said. However, a group of expert consultants commissioned by the Trani prosecutors to look into the case recommended running blood tests on some children before administering the vaccine.
"It seems rational to conduct blood tests in the subjects at risk and, in particular, in small children... in order to have some extra information to understand whether they are in a condition to stand the stress of the vaccine without serious health risks," wrote the consultants, including Giovanni Rezza of the Higher Health Institute (ISS).
